In 2002 Fiesta Korsten began teaching at Voortrekker High School. During the years that followed she has been a mother for learners and young teachers alike, as well as a sister to her friends. Former learners are now her colleagues, including her daughter, Carmia, who teaches in the same department. Mrs Korsten is well known in teaching circles in and around Pietermaritzburg.
As the end year exams began in 2016 this inspirational teacher was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Shockwaves crashed through the Voortrekker community of friends, staff and learners. She decided to undergo treatment in Hilton and cancer has not dulled this lady’s sense of humour.
In Mrs Korsten’s classes learners are taught about language conventions and everything they need to know about literature. More important though, are the lessons on life that she threads through her lessons. This is what makes her so special to everybody who has had dealings with this dynamic lady.
The 8th of February 2017 the Voortrekker High School community hosted a CANSA day to celebrate and salute this brave teacher. This day included a shave-a-thon, hair-colouring (strictly against the school rules!) and other support activities. The support from CANSA was much appreciated as it helped learners and staff to come to terms with this tragic event.
