At Voortrekker we are fortunate to accommodate approximately 60 boys on two fields of which one has floodlights where day-night games are played on. Our highlight of the year is our annual Voortrekker Cricket Series held during the July-holiday, where we host schools from all over the country.

Voortrekker has a rich history of rugby and has been part of the Maritzburg league for over 50 years. We host the Rugby Night Series where top school in KZN compete. Our annual Sport Day is a big highlight and rugby is the main event on the day, played by more than 50 teams.

Hockey has gone from strength to strength at Voortrekker the last couple of years. We accommodate about 60 girls and 40 boys in the respective 8 teams in the school. We participate in the Umgungundlovu league and every year some of Voortrekker’s learners represent KZN and compete at a national level.

Indoor Hockey

At Voortrekker we participate in Indoor Hockey for girls during the 4th term. It is a short season but serves as good preparation for the outdoor season. We use the YMCA indoor courts to practise four days a week with two junior and two senior teams.

Voortrekker High School is part of the High Schools E-Sports League (HSEL) where we compete against schools across the country. We have built a dedicated gaming centre where our learners can compete, practise and strive to be the best. We believe here at Voortrekker that the common definition of a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Competitive gaming hits every single one of these points. In competitive gaming your skills need to include incredible hand-eye coordination and precision. You need to be extremely competitive against the opposing team along with being a team player in your own right. Due to its incredibly large competitive format, physical strain, and set of required skills, gaming is a sport.

Voortrekker participates in the A-league fixtures in the KZN Midlands. We have yielded outstanding KZN players over the years who have competed at an international level. We also compete in the Fast Five Tournament as well as the Action Netball league hosted at the Pietermaritzburg Indoor Centre.

7s Rugby

7s Rugby is becoming increasingly popular and in the upcoming season we will have 2 senior and 2 junior teams. We host an annual 7s tournament held at the Woodburn Stadium that is a big highlight on the Pietermaritzburg rugby calendar.

Although not too big, the group of hardworking and dedicated individuals compete in 6 teams at school. We have yielded a number of top KZN players over the past few years and are extremely proud to offer specialised coaching by Mr D Brown.

Soccer at Voortrekker is always filled with excitement and challenges for all our rising stars. We have players that were selected over the past five years that respresented KZN-Midlands in 4/14 – u/19 teams. Our players receive specialised coaching by Mr P Wilson Olumu who is an ex Nigerian football midfielder and also ex-player for Maritzburg United.

Cross Country

A group of dedicated learners get together twice a week to train for cross-country events that take place at numerous schools throughout the year. We also have an excellent team that participates in the Mudman Series (cycling, running and swimming) and for the past two years they have won four out of the five events in the schools division.

Swimming is one of our main sporting codes in the school. We have a beautiful 12-lane swimming pool with well-equipped changing room facilities. Voortrekker has delivered many KZN, Midlands and National swimmers for over 10 years. For the past three years, we were place under the first three schools participating in the Afrikaans Gala, Co-Ed Gala and numerous other galas held by the schools in Pietermaritzburg.

Athletics is one of the smaller sporting codes at Voortrekker, but our athletes certainly proved that they have heart. We take part in three major school athletic events and often have athletes qualifying for the Midlands team. Our Inter-house athletics is held at the Harry Gwala Athletics stadium.

The school boasts with two squash courts. A group of dedicated players enjoys coaching by Mr A Immelman and Mr J Hack at beginner, intermediate and advanced level. This sport is slowly growing and we are excited for the future of squash at Voortrekker.

Target Shooting

We are a close-knit group of shooters that compete across KZN throughout the year. We are yield some of KZN’s top shooters and many of our learners have earned KZN colours and gone on to compete at national level. Our team is coached by a qualified police officer, Mr A Grové.

Olympic Weightlifting

We are very proud to be the first and only school in the province to offer olympic weightlifting as a school sport. We sent a team of six learners to represent KZN at the SA Championships in 2019 and brought home six gold medals and one silver. The sport is growing constantly.
